Infants

Page latest updated:

Children 0-2 years old are considered infants and they usually travel on the lap of their parent. If an infant has own seat (without child restraint device, CRD) she/he must sit on an adult's lap during take-off, landing and possible turbulence.

A healthy, newborn 2 days old baby can travel without restriction on all Finnair flights.

It is not possible to book INS on long-haul business class due to seats having airbags. Same applies if short-haul flight is operated with A350/A330 aircraft.

One adult may travel with two infants provided that one of the infants has a child ticket and infant uses CRD on his own seat.

Two adults both travelling with infants cannot be seated on same row as there is only one extra oxygen mask available per row.

Booking a seat for an adult with an infant (INF)

The maximum number of infants per flight is limited to the amount of infant life jackets and infant/extension belts on board. Infants shall NOT be seated on exit rows or at seats with airbag safety belts.

Use of child restraint device (CRD)

Finnair allows the use of child restraint devices (CRD) onboard all Finnair/Norra operated flights. A child restraint device accepted for use on Finnair flights must meet at least one of the following criteria:

a) CRDs approved for use in aeroplane by any JAA authority, the FAA or Transport Canada (on the basis of a national technical standard) and marked accordingly; or

b) CRDs approved for use in motor vehicles according to the UN standard ECE R 44, -03 or later series of Amendments; or

c) CRDs approved for use in motor vehicles and aeroplanes according to Canadian CMVSS 213/213.1; or

d) CRDs approved for use in motor vehicles and aeroplanes according to US FMVSS No 213 and (are) manufactured according to these standards on or after February 26, 1985. US approved CRDs manufactured after this date must bear the following labels in red lettering: 1) “This child restraint system conforms to all applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards” and 2) “This restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles and aeroplanes”; or

e) CRDs qualified for use in aeroplane according to the German “Qualification Procedure for Child Restraint Systems for Use in Aircraft” (TÜV Doc.: TÜV/958-01/2001).

How to book

Insert SR OTHS with brand name and model and which standard the CRD follows. The SR OTHS must be tied to the infant using the CRD and the free format text must begin with 'CRD'. Also NN1 to indicate the amount must be included in the request. Example:

SR OTHS AY NN1-CRD BRITAX ELITE ECE 44 REV.03/P2

Seats on exit rows and the rows in front and behind the exit row seats are not possible for CRD.

Infant outbound – child homebound

According to international aviation regulations, a 2-year-old child always has to have a reserved seat. When an infant turns 2 years of age during the journey, the whole journey is sold with a child fare. In these cases a seat has to be reserved for the child also for the outbound flight, even if the child is not yet 2 years old.

These guidelines concern flights operated and marketed by Finnair/Norra and are airline-specific. If other carriers are involved in the routing, check the procedure from them.

The following OS element must be added to the booking: OSAY INF OUTBOUND CHD INBOUND DOB DDMMYYYY/P1

Infant to PNR afterwards

When an infant needs to be added to a reservation afterwards, add name to the adult’s name element.
Example in Amadeus: 1/INF/MIKE/15JAN19 or if different lastname 1/INFSMITH/MIKE/15JAN19

Infant travelling one way

When an infant is travelling only on an outbound or inbound flight, but the adult is travelling with a round-trip ticket:
- adult to be priced normally with a round-trip fare
- infant to be priced with a oneway fare
