Sports equipment is considered a standard bag, if it weighs no more than 23kg (50lb) and its external dimensions (length + width + height) are no bigger than 90cm x 75cm x 45cm. If the equipment exceeds the standard measurements, passenger can take it with them for an extra charge.

Please specify on the booking what the item is with weight and dimensions, for example:

SR SPEQ-element is only informative and cannot be used for pricing. In case baggage allowance of the ticket exceeds, extra bag with the maximum weight of 23kg and external dimensions of 90cm x 75cm x 45cm can be paid in advance using SR PDBG (pre-paid additional baggage element). Any bag that is larger or heavier than a standard bag may incur a heavy and/or oversized bag charge. The heavy bag fee can be paid while making the booking online, in Manage booking or at the airport. Bags heavier than 32kg must be transported in cargo.  

We recommend informing us about all sports equipment in advance. This is because of the limited space on board the aircrafts. Especially if travelling in a group of ten or more people who will be taking skiing equipment, please inform us in advance as space on some of our aircraft is limited.

  • A ski or snowboard bag is considered as special baggage that is not included in your checked baggage allowance. Skiing equipment needs to be bought as extra baggage via NDC channels, online at Finnair.com or at the airport.
  • SSR SKIS element to be used for skis and snowboard equipment
  • The maximum weight of one ski or snowboard bag is 23kg and it includes related equipment, such as skis and poles packed in the same bag.
  • If ski shoes or snowboard shoes are packed in a separate bag, they count as one piece of checked baggage. If it exceeds the allowance on the ticket, a normal extra bag charge will be collected.
  • Finnair recommends passengers to inform us of skiing equipment in advance. This is due to the limited cargo space on some of our aircrafts. Especially if travelling in a group of ten or more people who will be taking skiing equipment, please inform us in advance. Also, if the flights are operated with smaller aircrafts, such as ATR or Embraer, advance notification of skis is required. 
  • Finnair Plus Platinum and Platinum Lumo members are allowed to carry one ski or snowboard bag free of charge.
  • On flights operated by ATR the maximum length for skis is 200cm.
  • A prior approval is needed from Finnair.
  • Ski jumping equipment (up to 32kg) are bookable via Finnair Agent Help Desk only.
  • A fixed fee is collected based on the route (longhaul/shorthaul), please see more information on Finnair.com.
  • Ski jumping equipment cannot be transported on flights operated with ATR aircraft.
  • Golfing equipment is considered one piece of special baggage that is not included in checked baggage allowance. Golf equipment needs to be bought as an extra baggage via NDC channels, online or at the airport. If in excess to allowance or to weight (23kg), a separate charge applies.
  • SSR GOLF element to be used for golf equipment.
  • Golf bags require advance confirmation due to limited cargo space on smaller aircraft. Number of confirmed golf bags varies per AC type.
  • Golfing equipment may consist of one golf bag containing golf clubs and a pair of golf shoes. If the golf shoes are packed in a separate bag, they count as one piece of checked baggage. If it exceeds the allowance on the ticket, a normal extra bag charge will be collected.
  • Finnair Plus Platinum and Platinum Lumo members are allowed to carry one set of golf equipment for free.

Bicycles are always considered special baggage. Bikes are confirmed according to a specified quota up to the quota limit on all aircraft types (including ATR). Maximum quota for BIKE cannot be exceeded due to restrictions in cargo hold space.

The maximum weight for a bicycle is 23kg. If the bike is heavier,  a heavy bag fee applies (up to 32kg) in addition to standard bike fee. 

If the customer has flights with other airlines, the operating carrier must be contacted separately to confirm the bicycle request on the connecting segments. 

Tandem bikes are bookable via Finnair Agent Help Desk only. A fixed fee is collected based on the route (longhaul/shorthaul), please see more information on Finnair.com.

Electric bikes, scooters, hoverboards, Segways cannot be transported as checked baggage, even if the battery is disconnected or removed.

Booking instructions via NDC:
For the time being, bicycles can be added to the booking only by Finnair, so contact Agent Help Desk for further assistance. 

Booking instructions via Edifact:
Fees for bicycles are available in GDS and SSR BIKE is used to insert it to a booking. Collecting BIKE charge in advance is preferred, but it is also possible to pay at the airport.  

Bikes are requested as SSR BIKE with dimensions:   
SR BIKE AY NN1-DIM 150X30X50CMS 15KGS/S3/P1 

To insert several bikes, they must have separate SSR’s (with quantity 1 per SSR).  

Requirements to get an auto-confirmation: 

  • Customer has a Finnair operated and marketed flight.
  • There is quota available for the specific flight(s).
  • The BIKE SSR is added in correct format to the PNR.
  • A bicycle must be packed in a protective case meant for transportation of bicycles.
  • The maximum weight for a bicycle is 23 kg. If the bike is heavier,  a heavy bag fee applies (up to 32kg) in addition to standard bike fee.

Please note: 

  • The ticket needs to be issued before or at the same time as the EMD-A, so that the EMD-A will get associated with the ticket.
  • These services are all quota based, and they will be confirmed upon availability.
  • EMD-A issuance is not possible before SSR has been confirmed. EMD creation is only possible from SSR element.
  • EMDs are non-refundable and non-exchangeable. However, EMDs can be voided during the issuance day until the sales report has closed.

Preparatory to transportation of bicycles, the handlebars shall be fixed sideways, the pressure of the tires reduced to avoid any problems in the unlikely event of pressurization changes during flight and, if possible, the pedals removed. When necessary, sharp projective parts shall be protected with plastic or cardboard to avoid damage to other load. Possible bags shall be detached from the bicycle itself.

Hockey equipment is considered one piece of standard baggage as long as it doesn't weigh more than 23kg (50lb) and maximum dimensions are no more than 90cm x 75cm x 45cm (35in x 30in x 18in). If it exceeds these measures, a heavy bag charge applies. 

When hockey sticks are carried separately, they are counted as one piece of baggage in which case customer's hockey equipment would be checked in as 2 pieces of baggage (hockey bag + sticks).

Windsurfing boards, canoes and kayaks: a prior approval is always needed from the airline. Request is to be done with SR WIND. A fixed fee is collected at the airport, please see more information on Finnair.com.

If the windsurfing board and the sail are packed separately, they are considered as two separate special bags.

Surfboards: with a maximum length of 210 cm (83 in) and maximum weight of 23 kg (50 lb) are considered as special baggage. Insert information as SR SURF. There is an embargo for surfboards on ATR operated flights due to small aircraft type.

If the board exceeds the maximum measurements of 210cm x 60cm x 40cm (83in x 24in x 16in), same fixed fee as for windsurfing boards, canoes and kayaks will be collected at the airport. A prior approval is needed from the airline and requested with SR WIND.

  • Fishing equipment is considered one piece of standard baggage, if it weighs no more than 23kg (50lb) and its external dimensions (length x width x height) are no more than 90cm x 75cm x 45cm (35in x 30in x 18in). If the equipment exceeds the standard bag measurements, passenger can take it with them for an extra charge. If the equipment is heavier than 23kg but within the allowed dimensions, the heavy bag fee can also be paid in advance.
  • A set of fishing equipment may consist of 1 or 2 rods, a reel, a landing net, a pair of fishing boots and a bait box, all packed together. 
  • SSR SPEQ element to be used for fishing equipment. Dimensions and weight required in SSR element.
  • Diving equipment (without air tanks) is considered one piece of baggage. If the diving equipment includes air tanks, a heavy bag fee applies.
  • Air tanks must be fully emptied prior to transportation.
  • Finnair Plus Platinum and Platinum Lumo members are allowed to carry one set of diving equipment for free.
  • Vaulting poles are bookable via Finnair Agent Help Desk only.
  • Vaulting poles (up to 32kg) may be transported on most Finnair routes excluding routes solely operated by ATR/E90/32S and all flights departing from Rome and Amsterdam. All dimensions are needed already at the time of reservation as transportation of vaulting poles requires special loading and both the length and width of the item are critical.
  • A fixed fee is collected based on the route (longhaul/shorthaul), please see more information on Finnair.com.

Walking poles are always carried as checked baggage. If walking poles are carried separately, they count as one piece of baggage.

  • One avalanche rescue backpack per person is allowed as checked baggage or cabin baggage, except on flights to/from USA.
  • The backpack must be packed in such a manner that it cannot be accidentally activated.
  • Airbags within the backpack must be fitted with pressure relief valves.
  • The trigger mechanism cannot contain more than 200mg net of explosives in Division 1.4S and a cylinder of compressed gas in division 2.2 (non-flammable, non-toxic) not exceeding 250ml.
  • The cartridge must be attached to the backpack. The size of the attached cartridge (containing division 2.2 gas) is not limited as long as it is meant for the backpack.
  • Separate spare cartridges are not allowed for transportation unless they are small cylinders containing Division 2.2 gas without a subsidiary hazard. The water capacity of each spare cylinder must not exceed 50 ml (for carbon dioxide a gas cylinder with a water capacity of 50ml is equivalent to a 28g cartridge) and the total number of such cartridges per passenger is max. 4.
  • Avalanche rescue backpacks which inflate using an electric fan that is powered by a lithium-ion battery are considered as consumer electronic devices when the battery is installed in the backpack. They are allowed within limits of the lithium-ion battery instructions.
  • Prior approval from Finnair is always needed.
  • If transported as checked baggage, please insert information as SR SPEQ: SSR SPEQ AY NN1- AVALANCHE RESCUE BACKPACK + details of the trigger mechanism/gas cylinder.
