Children travelling

You can book flights for children (2–11 years old) and infants (0–2 years old) via both NDC and Edifact channels.

If the baby has not been born yet and booking is for AY operated and marketed flights, you can make the reservation for the adult in advance, and contact our Agent Help Desk after the baby is born.

Children and infants are eligible for discounts. Children accompanied by an adult can travel with a child ticket which is 25% off the basic fare on most of our ticket types, excluding fees and taxes. Infants can travel with an infant ticket (PTC INF) which costs 10% of the adult’s ticket fare but does not include a seat of their own. Read more about booking a seat for infant. Young travellers (12 years or older) as well as unaccompanied children (5–11 years old) must have an adult ticket.

When travelling with small children on long-haul flights, we recommend our Premium Economy Class or Economy Class as the Business Class seats on our A350 and A330 aircraft do not support the use of a child seat.

Seating onboard

We always make sure that children sit next to one of their parents during the flight. However, we can’t guarantee that the whole family is seated next to each other. If you want to ensure seats next to each other for all family members, we recommend purchasing seats in advance.

Please note that everyone on board must sit in their own seat throughout the flight, including all children except for infants under 2 years of age. This also applies to the Business Class seats on our A350 and A330 aircraft.

For situations when a child is travelling alone, we have gathered information on booking instructions on a separate Unaccompanied minor page.

Travelling in our renewed Business Class on long-haul flights

All children who have turned 2 years old must be able to sit in the new Business Class seats in our A350 and A330 aircraft on their own for the whole flight and use regular safety belts. The seat does not support using a child seat.

Only one person is allowed per seat (excluding under 2-year-old infants) at all times due to safety regulations. The shell design prevents reaching the child from another seat especially when the safety belt sign is on.

We recommend our Premium Economy Class or Economy Class when travelling with small children on our A350 and A330 aircraft and especially if a child needs assistance during the flight, e.g. with eating or sleeping.

If a child is unable to sit in their seat and use the safety belt properly, our cabin crew may need to move the child and their parent to another travel class to ensure everyone’s safety.

Up to 1 day before departure, if a customer finds their booking unsuitable, we offer additional flexibility to change the travel class.

Pre-order meals for kids

Depending on your destination and travel class, our onboard meal service concept varies. To make sure the child gets the tastiest meal on board, a meal can be pre-ordered in advance. More information on booking a pre-order meal can be found on Ancillary services section.

At the airport

Our airport services are designed to make the journey even smoother and more hassle-free when travelling with small children. You can find information on check-in, security control and other airport services for families on Finnair.com. The Finnair Lounge on the non-Schengen side of Helsinki Airport has a dedicated family zone. Lounge access can be purchased already beforehand and more booking information is available on Ancillary services section.

We encourage customers to be at the departure gate a bit before boarding starts to avoid hassle. Families with small children are often boarded among the first passengers.
